A fall trip to Grand Canyon’s North Rim will require a closer look at the calendar. The National Park Service says two scenic roads will temporarily close while crews make repairs, adding another restriction to a season already shaped by damaged trails and limited visitor services.

In its September 30 announcement, the park set the closure of Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road for sunset October 15 through sunrise November 3, 2026. The work is being carried out with the Federal Highway Administration.

Those dates apply to the scenic roads. The North Rim entrance gate on State Route 67 is scheduled to remain open until sunset November 30, unless the season’s first major snowstorm forces an earlier closure. NPS warns that late-season emergency response will be extremely limited and may take significantly longer.

The hiking restrictions are separate

The new road schedule does not resolve the canyon’s flood closures. According to the park’s current hiking update, the entire North Kaibab Trail remains closed following the August 29 flash flood. Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, Cottonwood Campground and both bridges across the Colorado River are also closed.

NPS has not announced a reopening date for those areas. Travelers planning a rim-to-rim route should check the actual trail and bridge closures rather than treating an open entrance road as confirmation that a through-hike is possible.

Bring water and plan fuel stops

The park’s North Rim status page describes a limited-services season with no overnight lodging on the North Rim. Its campground has been operating without water or RV hookups. Campers must bring drinking water or purchase it from the adjacent General Store while it remains open.

The North Rim gas station closed for the season on September 19. NPS lists fuel outside the park at the North Rim Country Store and Jacob Lake. Visitors should confirm those businesses’ hours before relying on a stop.

The park operations page lists October 15 closures for the North Rim Backcountry Information Center at noon and the General Store at 4 p.m. The campground’s seasonal shutdown follows on the morning of October 16, according to the September 30 announcement.

For anyone with an existing reservation or itinerary, the useful next step is to check each road, trail and service individually. Conditions and access can change before a trip. These details reflect NPS information available October 1, 2026.
